After all the events in Europe last week, some dude in Würzburg Germany started swinging an axe at people on a train, injuring 20+ people, of which some are said to be in critical condition.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The police have shot the guy, and luckily he hasn’t made any fatalaties, yet.

Also I just remembered fellow opponaut FSI lives there; I hope you and your family are alright!

Sometimes I just don’t get why the world is changing so much lately.

Edit: I’m not linking it to terrorism, I’m just seeing all events as separate unusual events, which make me feel bad about the state of the world.

Manifestations of frustration that the world doesn’t revolve around a single individual and change at their will, I guess.

One would expect people to be used to this after all these years, though indeed people tend to be selfish.

Life is difficult and unfair. Some groups of people get upset that others are doing better than them, and take extreme measures to show that.

Each generation has to out-do the previous one.

And so it goes.

I was talking to my wife about this: Is the world crazy? Yup. Are people nuts? You bet. Should we abandon hope? Hells no. The world isn’t [much] more crazy than it has ever been, because hate isn’t going anywhere and its a helluva drug, but its surely more of a connected place.

The perp apparently got caught but there’s a lot of speculations floating around. That all happened at the other end of town but very early tweets said it was on the train station which would have been near me but thankfully not. My guess is that it’s not terrorism but rather a mentally ill person as said train and train route isn’t that much frequented. All I can say right now is damn, another night where news won’t let me sleep.

Ah, shit. Let’s just hope that this is building reverse karma for the rest of the year, but I doubt it.

Semi-related: Würzburg is a great town/city, especially if you’re into wine.

Luckily you are alright! Yes it could very well be a mentally ill person, that’s why I added the edit to the post.

I agree, we shouldn’t abandon hope. The thing with all this connectivity is that it can be used equally for good and bad, with the arab spring being an example of how connectivity can help revolution. Sadly it is impossible to restrict connectivity to good things.

I sure hope it does!

Würzburg indeed seems like a nice city, I think I might have been there as a child once, though I’m not sure.

yup, we just have to (as a people) learn to take the bad better. Do I want to not have to deal with these kinds of things? yes. Are there things we should be doing? yes. But for my part, I’ve decided not to let it drag down my perception of humanity. there are WAAAY more people doing great things out there than there are crazies doing terrible things.

I’m watching the news and the guy got shot; the number of injured people is lower than initialy reported. According to the Bavarian interior minister the perpertraitor was a 17-year old Afghan.

Religious/racial hatred are nothing new, and have been around literally forever.

The always-connected media makes these events seem more frequent than they are because they tend to dwell on the ones that already happened until the next one occurs. Fear=ratings.

And the astronomical inequality that abounds in the world today is pushing people who would otherwise just say something hurtful/ignorant to act out on their misguided frustrations. There are also many who work to capitalize on said anger for their own gain.

One of my main agreements with Bernie was that the levels of inequality today are unworkable. People may not be friends, but so long as everyone is living the same relative lifestyle, people can co-exist peacefully because no one is doing that much better than anyone else. Inequality is never going away completely, but there are far too few people with far too much wealth and it is creating chaos.

Was he shot in the arm or leg, or in any other way that would have incapacitated him rather than killing him?

I have no idea. Usually German police officers are trained well and advised to de-escalade. Kinda weird considering that he ‘only’ had an axe but still got shot.

Yup. Kinda weird that this incident gets that much attention. This seemed rather.. well.. dare I say not like terrorism and more like a mentally ill person. Thank god there aren’t many people injured and none death.

Still weird to see my hometown being mentioned on nationwide news and even the BBC.

Yep, they sent him to a psychiatric hospital after treating him. They said they found no links to Islamic terrorism.

I read the article again and apparently they did shoot him dead after he fled the train and was running. Someone else attacked people with a knife on a train back in May, shouting “Allahu akbar”. That guy was disabled and arrested and not linked to terrorism. That was at the end of the article and bolded for some reason.

the world itself isn’t changing; we’ve always had the unique skill of being tremendous pieces of shit to each other. The difference is that when something bad happens, we find out about it within minutes. decades ago, news might have taken weeks to reach you if it got to you at all. I think we all remember Sandy Hook from 4 years ago, but there was also the Bath School Bombing of 1927.

Think about that for a second. in the year 1927- when my grandparents were kids and some of your great-grandparents had just been born- a guy decided to blow up a school, killing dozens of kids. Why? his taxes went up and he lost his election bid.

this shit’s always been going on.
